In Reflection

While an industry bates its collective breath awaiting the unveiling of 2005's winners, let's take a moment to reflect on the inaugural champs of the Ragtrader Fashion Retailer of the Year Awards from last year.
The cream of the 2004 crop will always have the distinction of being the first recipients of the awards that recognise general excellence in all aspects of fashion retail.
Among those all smiles at the glittering first prize-giving at Sydney's Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on 1 December 2004 was the Jay Jays team, taking out the award for Best Chain.
The teen fashion specialist, operated by Melbourne-based Just Group, was considered by the Ragtrader judges to consistently stand out from the crowd across all criteria: first impressions; store layout, visual merchandising; customer service; staff training incentives; marketing, advertising and promotions.
Judge Amanda Young, executive director of the Australian Centre for retail Sales, said Jays Jays won because they managed to purvey their brand message irreverant fun so well to the market place.
"They sell fun fashion at reasonable quality for low prices and package their total offer well," Young said.
Behind the scenes Jay Jays were just as impressive "with one of the most generous staff reward schemes we encountered".
Sydney Street, the 2004 Best Independent award winner, was adjudged to have similar pulling power. The Adelaide-based women's casual wear specialist was considered by Young to demonstrate great understanding of three areas Ð encouraging staff to use their talent and initiative, managing stock effectively and maximising floor space productivity.
Myer A radical product range, image and improved supply chain got Rockmans womens' fashion outlets the nod as runner up in the Best Chain category.
Awards were also handed out to the best Independents in each state with Belinda (NSW), Sydney Street (SA), Mazi (Vic), Lindy Rosenwax (WA) and High Tide Mark (QLD) taking home the gongs.
But, that was then, this is now. Who's going to be taking the prizes for 2005. Watch this space.
