Sydney's Queen of caftans reinvents herself
Australian label Camilla has branched out from its signature silk caftans and included jumpsuits, dresses and ponchos as part of its Summer 2006 line. The collection, titled 'Women of the World', is targeted at women aged "18 to 85" and will be available for purchase at the start of July.
Camilla Franks, designer and owner of the label, said the move fits in with her vision to expand the brand internationally. "My goal is to have my designs stocked in boutiques, department stores and resorts around the world," she confirmed. "Extending my designs will help keep my current market interested and hopefully attract more clients."
Inspired by her travels abroad, Franks split the collection into four lines: Australiana, Africa, Middle East and South America. Each piece is made from natural fibres including silk, cotton and linen with glass beading and hand embroidery for "added glamour".
Franks said her choice of materials is integral to the label's reputation. "Quality is important for my customers because women buy my clothes to feel both glamorous and comfortable."
The collection comes after a venture into the uniform business earlier this year when Franks designed for staff members at luxury hotel, Raes at Wategos. "It was a very exciting project and the owner and I had a very similar vision. Now, the staff not only wear my caftans but hang on them on the back of the guest's doors too," she said.
Her current collection will be stocked at Directions in Double Bay, David Jones and Harvey Nicholls in Dubai. Prices range from $190 to $395 wholesale with every item available in a one-size-fits-all.
