What's selling in Mooloolaba, QLD
Mooloolaba is a popular coastal town situated at the southern end of the Maroochy region on the Sunshine Coast.
Located 100km north of Brisbane, Mooloolaba offers both a beachfront and riverfront location along the Mooloolah River and has an eclectic mix of boutiques, restaurants and nighteries.
It has an all-weather port home to a large trawling fleet and also the finishing point for sailing races from Sydney and Auckland. It is also a favoured anchorage for ocean cruisers and fishermen, with its international standard marinas and quality restaurants. Next to the port is a large shopping, dining and entertainment complex called The Wharf.
Lea Meharry, owner of womenswear store Cherry Lane Boutique, says Mooloolaba is a lively town with a lot to offer locals and visitors.
"It's a fun and vibrant place," says Meharry.
"Mooloolaba is predominantly a tourist town. The tourism industry would be the largest contributor to the local economy."
Apart from the pristine beaches, surf and warm climate, other features of the town include Underwater World, Australia Zoo and a buzzing nightlife.
"Visitors who come to Mooloolaba always come back," adds Meharry.
Cherry Lane Boutique stocks trendy and unique apparel for women who are "young or young at heart". Popular brands include Bebe, Boo Radley and Vintage Bang.
It is located on The Esplanade, which is situated opposite the beach, and also offers a spray tanning and nail service.
Major chain stores are scarce in Mooloolaba, with independently owned fashion retailers making up the bulk of clothing stores in the town.
Lisa Pekuri, owner of womenswear store Ebony Fashions, says the absence of major retailers has secured the town's reputation as a unique shopping destination.
"We [independent retailers] find that trading is great because there is a mix of interesting boutiques in Mooloolaba," says Pekuri.
"For that reason ladies like shopping here because there are more shops and a wide variety. There are more boutiques and that's why it's a special area and very well liked."
Mooloolaba has a booming tourist trade all year round and attracts visitors from Brisbane (which is only an hours drive from Mooloolaba) and all over Australia.
"We also get a lot of international trade," adds Pekuri.
"In winter we have an influx of people from New Zealand who come to stay in the Mooloolaba."
Ebony fashions stocks a large selection of casual and dress wear for women aged 30 and up. Top selling brands include Goondiwindi Cotton, Morrison Country Clothing, Victoria Cooper, DP Jeans, VSSP, Vertice and Kariba.
