Fashion students graduating from the KVB Institute of Technology kicked off their final parade in tyStaged inside Sydney's Town Hall, the parade's 19th-century inspired designs even drew some murmurs from the crowd with gothic black dresses and sweeping floor-length ball gowns stealing the show.
Course Co-ordinator Robert de Giovanni believed the students were successful in capturing the idea that fashion design could enhance people's lives. "The students have created clothes which are very wearable and at the same time 'aesthetic' in the finest sense of the word."
Proving that wool is truly an Australian fashion staple, students went on to present a series of striking hand-knitted garments made from oversized and recycled fabrics.
"It is also very Australian, dealing with wools and yarn as it does," Giovanni agreed. "But the recycled elements also reflect the philosophy of sustainable design which is definitely an important consideration for fashion designers of the future."
Topping the show with a selection of 16 garments from the Beijing Institute of Clothing and Technology, the parade also featured designs made using traditional tapestry, beadwork and bright embroidery. Giovanni said that 'impact' was the main theme for their creations and if the audience reaction was anything to go by, that's exactly what it did.
