Zambesi flies high with Air New Zealand

Edgy New Zealand label Zambesi returned to its flock after agreeing to design the staff uniforms of national airline carrier Air New Zealand (ANZ).
The Auckland-based label, run by Elizabeth and Neville Findlay, sourced merino wool from more than eight homegrown sheep stations for use in the new look range, whose signature centres around a unique Maori design, labelled a Koru.
The uniform, which will be worn by cabin crew, pilots, airport and travelcentre staff from March, made its official debut at New Zealand Fashion Week, which the airline sponsors, earlier this month. It is the continuation of a 30-plus year tradition of well known labels designing the uniform, which began in the 1970s when the airline used Vinka Lucas, followed by Thornton Hall and incumbent Barbara Lee. The uniform was last updated in 1992.
ANZ CEO Rob Fyfe said Zambesi's interpretation is based on a natural colour scheme of teal, greenstone and schist and has a distinct New Zealand flavour with Koru-inspired curves and an embroidered Maori design penned by Derek Lardelli. Four signature pieces including a shirt incorporating the Maori design, wrap, hat and paua-inspired scarf culminate to emphasise the uniform's uniquely New Zealand design.
For female cabin crew, a dress, Merino wrap, trousers and a military-styled hat have been introduced, giving woman the option to wear garments that flatter their own body shape. For men, a single-breasted suit worn with a shirt and optional tie completes the cabin crew look.
Merino wool sourced from more than eight New Zealand wool stations was used extensively to create many pieces of the new uniform including all suiting, the pilot's hat, women's top and wrap and men's tie.
Fyfe said where ever possible, the airline worked with New Zealand suppliers to help support local industry.
Showcasing New Zealand designers and their talents would continue to be a key priority for the airline, Fyfe said.
