What's selling in Glenelg, SA

Glenelg is a thriving beachside resort suburb located 10km from Adelaide. It offers boutique shopping within walking distance from the ocean and a historic tram which links the seaside town with Adelaide's CBD. Other attractions include pristine white sandy beaches, the Rodney Fox Shark Museum, HMS Buffalo (a replica of the ship that brought early setters to Holdfast Bay in Glenelg) and the annual Vodafone Beach Volleyball tour.
The main shopping precinct in the town is Jetty Road, which hosts an array of fashion stores, cafes, restaurants, hotels and souvenir shops. The majority of stores in this area trade seven days a week and at the southern end of the road is Moseley Square, which marks the end of the tramline and the beginning of the beach.
Melanie Tomblin, fashion buyer for women's boutique Blazae Fashion Emporium, believes there are many benefits to owning a retail store in the area.
"Tourists from overseas and interstate regularly visit Glenelg," says Tomblin.
"It provides a relaxed lifestyle near the water, has an eclectic mix of shops and has a wide variety of pubs, hotels and restaurants.
"There is also the tram which runs down Jetty Road. Recently more trams were put on which is a big drawcard because it makes the town even more easily accessible."
Blazae Fashion Emporium stocks casual and dresswear, lingerie, shoes, bags and jewellery. Popular brands include Bardot, Playboy, Love Kylie, Punkyfish and Emily The Strange.
Peter Shearer Menswear store manager Michael Olde says Glenelg has a strong tourist trade and is also a hotspot for international stars.
"A few celebrities have come into my store including Billy Connolly."
Olde describes Glenelg as a cosmopolitan seaside resort town, which is not solely dependent on tourists to inject money into the local economy.
"A lot of local people shop in the town and are very committed to supporting local businesses," says Olde. "Glenelg is the most popular beachside in Adelaide and a lot of people love shopping here because they don't have to go to the city to find what they want."
A new development, which will create a new shopping precinct in the town, is currently under construction.
"Holdfast Shores is a new complex that is currently being built," reveals Olde. "When completed, it will offer both accommodation and shopping."
Peter Shearer Menswear is located on Jetty Road and stocks both casual and formalwear along with shoes, belts, cufflinks and wallets. Brands include Mossimo, Ben Sherman, Gloweave, Cambridge, Blazer, Van Heuson, Ted Baker and Jeffery Bean.
