GOLD COAST: Billabong has sealed the deal on its acquisition of Canadian retailer West 49.

The completion of the take over comes three months after Billabong first announced its plan to acquire the North American boardsports retailer, and will lift Billabong's store numbers in the region from 90 to 230.

Earlier this year, Billabong CEO Derek O'Neill explained the deal would increase the penetration of Billabong's brands in the Canadian market.

“West 49 is a complementary business and promises to be an ideal Canadian distribution platform for Billabong to showcase its brands and extend its reach to the end consumer,” O'Neill said.

Brands within the Billabong portfolio include Element, Von Zipper, Honolua Surf Company, Kustom, Nixon, Tigerlily, Sector 9, DaKine and Billabong.

West 49 was founded in 1995 by Sam Baio and is a retailer of youth action sports apparel, footwear, accessories and equipment. Billabong reported Baio, along with all other West 49 staff, would be retained under the terms of the acquisition.
