MELBOURNE: One of the largest manufacturers of tailored menswear in Australia is up for sale.

Stafford Group manufactures brands such as Anthony Squires, Stafford Ellinson, Sax Altman, Giotto, FITS, 1096 by Stafford Ellinson, Vivaldi and Stafford Corporate.

It also operates 37 retail outlets under the Anthony Squires, Stafford Direct and Shearers Menswear banners.

Chairman Maurice Lubansky, who ran the company for 63 years until 2009, said he was looking to 'rationalise' and 'simplify' assets of the family company.

It is understood the Lubansky family is seeking to continue an interest in the Stafford Group where possible. KPMG Corporate Finance has been appointed to manage the sale.

Lubansky said he will only sell the business to the "right buyer at the right price."

Stafford Group has a long history in the Australian clothing market, having produced Anthony Squires menswear since 1948.

It is claimed the brand has been worn by every Prime Minister - from Robert Menzies to Kevin Rudd - aside from Paul Keating who "preferred Italian".
