Kristie MacDonald and Marty Salmon have milked their background in the music business for interior design inspiration for their latest venture, For Artists Only. Brought to life with the help of interior designer Margo Reed, stand-out features in the newly opened 35 sqm store include a full-size drum kit chandelier, an authentic gold Technic 1200 turntable displaying designer jewellery, and thick gold picture frames filled with backstage passes from legendary rock shows.
“We both really have a passion for music, having worked for one of what we think is Australia's best record labels,” MacDonald says. “Lots of the music elements in the store are personal mementos of our past.”
For MacDonald and Salmon, For Artists Only is the answer to what they felt was a dire need for high end designer fashion in Sydney's harbourside Rose Bay. Having decided to locate their boutique in the eastern Sydney suburb only six months ago, the duo have worked quickly to fill their shop’s racks with a kaleidoscope of designer brands from around the globe. Labels include Sass and Bide, Lover, Shakuhachi, Maniamania, JBrand, Jessie Hill, American Vintage, KJ by Kirrily Johnston and Zimmerman.
“It’s about combining our love of music and all things creative, creating a cool space where our customers can feel comfortable, and, of course, stocking some of the most inspiring threads in town," MacDonald says.
