What to wear when the credit bubble bursts? Assia Benmedjdoub spotlights the biggest trends on show at trade fair Fashion Exposed.

Tough times

It might have been the spring/summer instalment of Fashion Exposed but not all designers upped the colour palette and lowered the thread count. Dark leathers and heavy cottons were offset with zippers, studs and buckles. Even lingerie collections weren't safe.

Cut backs

There's short and then there's micro. It was the latter raising brows and opening order books this year - everything from tiny shorts to butt skimming mini skirts captured the spirit of the trend.

On the Fringe

It must have something to do with the influx of music festivals in Australia. Indie denim looks, ranging from micro denim shorts for girls and geeky eyewear and neon shirts for boys, were all the rage.

Free fall

Whether buyers were aiming for the bohemian market with harem pants and loose tops or a contemporary market with geometric prints and futuristic cuts, draped fabrics were a big trend at the fair.

Statement due

When times are tough, the tough get accessorising. Statement jewellery made a huge return to the spring/summer 2009/10 agenda with oversized rings, chunky bangles and layers upon layers of necklaces.
