Police: help us nail rapist

Victorian police have made a direct appeal to Australian clothing manufacturers and retailers for help in solving a series of sex crimes.

The state's Sexual Crimes Squad is currently investigating a number of sexual assaults and rapes committed on women in the Melbourne city area in the three months between April and June this year.
Detective senior constable Eric Harbis said while investigations into the crimes were continuing, police had received information from a number of sources that confirmed the alleged offender had been seen wearing a distinctive yellow t-shirt near the time the offences were committed.

Harbis said while details were sketchy, the witnesses had confirmed the t-shirt had a design, word or pattern printed along the front lower half of the t-shirt in orange, red or a combination of both.

He was unable to confirm what fabric the t-shirt was made of, nor whether it had any motifs or wording on the back.

It is understood several department stores, including Target and Myer, have also been approached for assistance in tracking the manufacturer of the t-shirt.

Harbis said police are keen to hear from all clothing manufacturers, screen printers or distribution outlets that may have had dealings with or knowledge of the garment. Anyone with any information regarding this is asked to contact the Victoria Police Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
