NATIONAL: Pacific Brands has scored a $150 million contract as the prime vendor to supply clothing, footwear and personnel support items to the New Zealand Defence Force.

The company's New Zealand workwear business, Yakka Apparel Solutions, won the NZ$200 million project after a rigorous tender process.

Pacific Brands group general manager workwear Simon Smith described the deal as "extremely significant" for the business, which had supplied the Defence Force under a ten year contract which expired in 2010.

"We are looking forward to our ongoing relationship and further improving the service we provide," Smith said.

While the new contract has an initial term of five years, it has two, two-year rights of renewal.

Smith said the Pacific Brands supply chain was a major factor in winning the contract. New Zealand Defence Minister Wayne Mapp credited the company for its technological innovations and best possible value for taxpayer dollars.

Pacific Brands is based in Melbourne, with brands including Holeproof, King Gee, Bonds, Berlei, Slazenger and Clarks.
