MGPO’s $8m faceliftRagtrader can reveal the cost of restoring Melbourne’s GPO building will be at $8 million, as the spectacular project races towards a completion goal of early 2013.
While the sum has yet to be released to other media, restorations to the 150-year-old complex commenced in April with most works currently taking place to to the external west wing.
Property fund manager ISPT was required to complete the works in line with the building’s heritage position, with detailed fascade repairs across window frames, stone and roofing.
Marketing manager Melissa Chisnall confirmed trade would not be impacted by the external work, with specially designed scaffolding minimising disruptions to retailers and customers.
Once complete, removal of old cable works will allow for colour-controlled decorative lighting for themed shopping activations and seasons.
During the restorations, a super-sized mesh mural featuring stylised graphics of the fascade has been erected around the site. The 5000 square metre wrap is the largest ever seen in Australia, Chisnall said.
ISPT took lease of the building in 2005, while Australia Post remains the owner.
