MELBOURNE: Established accessories designer Catherine Manuell has lent her support to a new project undertaken by RMIT visual merchandising students.

The project has seen the Victorian designer mentor the students who has since created a design project based around the Catherine Manuell Design (CMD) label.

The window installation project will remain on show at RMIT for the next three weeks.

Manuell said being involved in the project had also allowed her to experience  a new array of "fresh, exciting concepts and visual mediums".

"I feel very strongly about giving back to the community that has supported me, it's imperative to nurture Melbourne's creative talent," she said.

Manuell, who originally trained as a teacher, started designing hats more than 20 years ago and then worked as a freelance designer for labels including Metallicus, Stussy Sista and Kookai. She launched CMD 11 years ago.

Her label is now stocked in boutiques across every state in Australia as well as several in the United States and New Zealand.
