NEW ZEALAND: More than 180 staff have been made redundant by debt ridden manufacturing company Lane Walker Rudkin, according to the staff's union representatives.

National Distribution Union secretary Laila Harre said 186 redundancies had been announced by the receivers of the textile and apparel maker over the past 24 hours.

These include 19 jobs in the brand's factory in Pahiatua, 61 in Greytown, 102 in its head office in Christchurch and four Auckland sales workers, Harre told Fairfax newspapers.

"[The redundancies are] an absolute tragedy for the workers concerned and a new low point of business irresponsibility in New Zealand," she said.

There has been no word on what the news means for the company's Brisbane office where 60 staff are employed.

Earlier this week the receivers in control of the company put the 105-year-old business up for sale after it was placed into the hands of receivers on April 29 after falling into what is believed to be a $50 million-plus debt.

Tenders for the business close on May 22.
