SYDNEY: The idea of knitting as both a fashion and an art is explored in a new exhibition being staged during Sydney Design Week later this year.

The collection, curated by UTS Fashion and Textiles lecturer Alana Clifton-Cunningham, saw the education specialist deconstruct familiar woollen garment structures to create body pieces that act as a second skin.

Clifton-Cunningham said the exhibit aimed to question the relationship of knitting to the human body.

"I was inspired by the notions of body adornment and patterning in the form of traditional body scarification - as a rite of passage, tribal identification, spiritual protection, or aesthetic beautification - to inform the design outcomes.

"I wished to explore the non-verbal messages and layers of meaning embedded within scarification and also knitting."

Clifton-Cunningham will speak on her work at the DAB LAB Research Gallery on August 4.
