SYDNEY: It appears campaigns staged by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) against Camilla Franks have had the desired effect.
The animal protection organisation announced Franks will cease using fur in her womenswear collections following months of protests against the designer. Protests included graphic campaigns outside Camilla's flagship store in Bondi Beach (NSW).
PETA director of campaigns Jason Baker revealed Franks would join a list of other fur-free Australian designers including Alannah Hill, Kit Willow, Gail Elliott, Fleur Wood, Nicola Finetti and Gail Sorronda.
“Today's conscientious consumers are opposed to fur and the cruelty to animals that it represents, and Ms Franks is to be applauded for respecting those concerns,” Baker said.
Franks was unavailable for comment at the time of press, however a Camilla spokesperson had previously revealed Franks was using fur in only one per cent of her designs and was meticulous about sourcing fur from cruelty-free suppliers.
PETA said it is considering targeting other local fur-using designers, including Arabella Ramsay and Rachel Gilbert.
