SYDNEY: A collection of more than 60 objects from a group of high-profile Japanese fashion designers will go on display at Sydney's Powerhouse Museum later this month.

The private collection, owned by former museum trustee Gene Sherman, features works from the studios of contemporary designers Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons fame and Yohij Yamamoto.
The collection has been donated to the cultural icon by Dr Sherman, who said she had "retired" from her wearing wardrobe.

Powerhouse Museum spokeswoman Belinda Humphrey said Sherman's first encounter with Japanese fashion was at a Double Bay boutique in 1985. Her collection began with a Miyake one-sleeved leather jacket.

"[Dr] Sherman has a wearing wardrobe of about 20 Japanese designer garments. As she acquires a new piece she retires an older one. This philosophy and discipline has informed her collecting and wearing of clothes for many years."

The collection will be on display from February 28 to May 31.
