SYDNEY: And then there was one. Christian Lines looks set to be the only male designer to take part in this year's Rosemount Australian Fashion Week (RAFW) graduate parade.
Lines would be joined by three fellow graduates from the Fashion Design Studio Sydney Institute, including Seema Pun, Soeli Pedrozo and Rachel Sherwood.
The move marked a departure from the previous RAFW graduate showcase, where an all-male crew was selected to take part in the spring/summer 2008/09 event. One of those designers, Dion Lee, would make a return to the RAFW schedule this year to unveil his independent spring/summer 2009/10 collection.
Fashion Design Studio Sydney Institute head Nicholas Huxley said the latest graduates were chosen for their "wonderful" sense of proportion, colour, design details and innovation.
"I love what they're doing and I am so proud to be part of their RAFW debut."
Lines' graduate streetwear collection 'Transitioning the Lines' mixed Asian and Western design influences and was comprised of three stories. The colour palette included cool aquas, neon greens and light peaches offset with neon greens, smokey taupes and rich purples.
Pun, inspired by the parallels between man-made structures and nature, created a range of architectural garments while Sherwood's womenswear collection reinterpreted classic cuts and structured shapes for a more casual, urban environment.
Brazilian-born Pedrozo also experimented with shape and proportion in her 'Study in Ink' collection, which utilised both natural fibres and industrial fabrics to create sharp, sculptural pieces.
RAFW's spring/summer 2009/10 instalment would run at Sydney's Overseas Passenger Terminal from April 27 to May 1.
