MELBOURNE: Escapism, origin and cleanse are key words inspiring fashion trends for autumn/winter 2010 and 2011 in Australia, according to UK based trend forecasting agency Mudpie.

Mudpie marketing manager Jo Little told an industry audience at Fashion Exposed that these concepts would inform the textiles, shapes and style of apparel and accessories for men, women and children in the forthcoming seasons.

Little explained that the concept of escapism for women captures 1920's vintage elements, circus and theatre costume flair, flamenco style and opulence. Colours such as indigo, mauve, tarnished gold, jewel tones, dusky rose and claret would be significant, along with painterly florals and vintage prints. For men, Little said escapism would result in haphazard styling, dandy elements, flamboyant neck scarves, paisleys and silks. Children would see it in terms of flapper style dresses for girls and cute circus prints, vests, caps and stitch detailing for boys.

The second theme Little covered was origin, which she said was drawn from traditional customs and spiritual beliefs. She explained that Mayan culture, mythology, equestrian, South American rodeo and Brazillian street art would influence design. Spice tones, coffee shades and blue would appear, with textures including damask and tapestry. Women would see jodhpurs, ponchos and rustic knits come through, while for men Mexican iconography, distressed finishes and oversized silhouettes would feature. Young fashion would see chunky knit ponchos, toggles and fringing.

In contrast, Little outlined that the theme of cleanse would evoke serenity and minimalism. Architectural shapes and moulding would inform fashion silhouettes, while industrial inspired graphics would appear in textiles. Little said jumpsuits, block paneling and angular elements would come through. A muted palette of lilac, steel grey, midnight blue and green would be lifted with coral.
