NATIONAL: Australian designers looking to get a foot into the High Street market could be in for a long wait.

Discount department store Target has suspended designer collaborations in the wake of a softening market. The retailer was one of the first major players to embrace the trend in Australia, with partnerships spanning across local brands Josh Goot and Gail Sorronda and global designers Stella McCartney and Zac Posen.

Despite reporting comparable store sales growth of 2.9 per cent for the 14 weeks ended April 13, executives said they would shift their strategy to focus on value items.

Target would not confirm when its designer collaboration program would be re-introduced.
