AUCKLAND: An auction of vintage apparel spanning more than four decades has gone under the hammer in Auckland.

The sale of the 400-piece collection, by prominent New Zealand fashion designer Vinka Lucas, raised around $NZ80,000 ($A63,350) after being put up for sale at Webb's Auction House.

The collection included pieces made for the Miss New Zealand pageants in the 1960s and 1970s and featured ball gowns, retro evening and daywear dresses, cocktail hats and fascinators, jumpsuits, kaftans and patio pyjamas.

According to the Webb catalogue, Lucas owned and operated a designer salon in Auckland called Marée de Maru and subsequently added the label Vinka Lucas After Five. During an extended period of working overseas she operated under the label Vinka Lucas Paris.

Webb's spokeswoman Annie Webb said many of the garments were created in exclusive fabrics by Swiss design house Jakob Schlaepfer, which specialised in all-over embroidered silks, velvet, sequins, lasers and crystal designs.

Many were limited editions with only 200 metres having been produced of each design.

In an interview with New Zealand radio station Newstalk ZB, Webb said the auction was a "pretty special occasion". She said New Zealanders would have to wait for high profile designers such as Trelise Cooper or Karen Walker to be aged in their late 70s before there was another event like it.
