Changes afoot at Cassette Society
Cult streetwear brand The Cassette Society has undergone an ownership restructure, following the departure of co-founder and designer Katie Boyd.
First launched by Boyd and business partner Tania Rickards in 2006, the label was initially stocked in just six General Pants Co stores before rolling out nationally by its third year.
The brand now has over 80 stockists in Australia and New Zealand, with steady growth in the US through
e-tailer ShopBop.
Rickards did not reveal the circumstances behind Boyd’s departure but confirmed she no longer had a stake in the business. Former Insight womenswear design assistant Lauren Risti has now taken on the role of designer for the brand.
Insight is owned by Bleach Australia, the company responsible for reviving the fortunes of denimwear label Ksubi, which entered into administration earlier this year. Risti spent three years at Insight, working closely on the women’s denim and swim categories.
“I solely coordinated the swim development from head office and worked with a freelance designer,” she said. “I really enjoyed the swim category and was able to develop my artwork and print knowledge. Insight was a great brand to further develop my career in the industry and better understand the surf/street market.”
It is understood additional production and development staff have been employed at The Cassette Society as it looks to kick off its next phase of national and international growth.
