Generations of Earthlings have been a tad naughty with our natural resources over the past couple of hundred years, and a few extra bucks here and there is a small price to pay towards our redemption, whatever impact that might have on our personal or business lives.
Businesses will cope.
They always evolve to make the best of a given situation. If an existing approach becomes expensive or impractical, a workaround or even a whole new enterprise will be cunningly devised in its place. It’s called human ingenuity and that’s what business is all about. Certain roles might change, but with so many new challenges arising I seriously can’t see employment opportunities drying up.
Whether a tax will prove to be the best long-term solution for both the environment and the economy remains to be seen, but we should be justifiably proud as a nation for at least doing SOMETHING. The outcry from those who oppose the tax has been somewhat baffling. These same people seem content to pay arbitrary bank fees and speeding fines costing many times more without similar protest. At least this cause has an end to justify the means.
Either way, I think we stand to gain more than we risk losing. If we get the process wrong - well, there’s no serious harm done and we’d have learned a few things along the way. Is humble pie really that bad after all?
But if we get it right - success breeds success. Other countries will jump onboard. Then we’d have ensured the health and longevity of our planet (and indeed the fashion industry which operates all over it) for many years to come. It sounds like a worthy gamble to me.

Superior Activewear
Superior Activewear is a premier supplier of goods to the activewear sector. We see the biggest potential risk as uncertainty in consumer confidence.

As a company, we do not believe the carbon tax disadvantages us in terms of our existing market and our competitors like us are all importers. There will of cause be some increases in our warehousing and distribution costs which may result in minimal price increases over time. These rises however, compared to the recent increases we have witnessed in world cotton prices, would be almost insignificant by comparison.
In terms of the fashion industry (which represents about 25 per cent of our business) we see the biggest potential risk being the possible increase in uncertainty in consumer confidence continuing to impact on retail sales as consumers opt to curtail discretionary spending in favor of savings. Although in regards of our offering of budget priced tees, we believe the impact of this, if any, would be minimal.
Personal opinions of the management and staff here are in agreement. Something has to be done about pollution and global warming, the scientific evidence of our (humanities) impact on the global environment is overwhelming and undeniable. As much as Australia’s stand may have little, if any, impact without all the world’s nations taking similar action, someone has to make a start.
