Harris Scarfe opening
MELBOURNE: Adelaide-based department store Harris Scarfe has taken space at Melbourne's Knox Shopping Centre. Scheduled to launch on level one in October, the store will occupy 2700 square metres of space. The 160-year-old business has confirmed it will seek to employ around 50 new staff from the area with a further 20 employed during the fit-out process. The store, the brand's 40th, will stock men's and women's apparel as well as homewares and manchester. Other apparel brands in the centre include Cotton On, Edge Clothing, Jay Jays, Jeans West, Temt and Witchery.
ADA job losses
BENDIGO: Thirty-five staff at clothing manufacturing company Australian Defence Apparel have lost their jobs. It is understood both full-time and part-time staff were affected by the restructure. The company said the cuts were as a result of a usual pattern and it was confident most workers would be offered positions again in a few months when orders picked up again. The Bendigo-based company last year entered into an $80 million agreement with the Australian Government to supply body armour to the Australian Defence Force.
New workshops
SYDNEY: FBI Fashion College in Sydney has trialled a new workshop aimed at offering attendees an introduction to fashion design. The workshop, the first of which was staged on May 22, aims to offer those who may be interested in fashion design a taste of both the creative and practical side of the industry. Targeted at those seeking a career change and school leavers, subjects covered in the course include introductions on illustrating, pattern-making and construction. The dates for the next short course have yet to be confirmed. For more: 02 9566 2020.
