The ongoing demand for simple black leggings has prompted the owner of womenswear brands Sass and Fate to launch a third label.

Called Betty Basics, the new label comprises “every type of undergarment you can image”, from long and short sleeve tops to slips, tights and leggings.

It is the brainchild of Talitha Becker, who founded the Sass Clothing wholesale business back in 1997. “We have had a simple pair of black leggings in our Sass range which has literally been flying off the racks season after season,” Becker said.

“We cannot keep up with demand and have constant request for stock with many back orders. From this, we realised that there was a real opportunity to provide basic, unfussy wardrobe essentials that feel like a second skin and don't cost the earth.”

The first Betty Basics collection is winter 2011 and was launched at Fashion Exposed in August. The label will release a summer and winter collection each year, to be supplemented with smaller injections of key seasonal styles.

Becker said price points for the label span $9.95 to $39.95, with product manufactured in China. The colour palette for the debut winter collection incorporates crisp white, black, nude and stripes.

“Betty is all about competitive prices, ensuring our retailers get the best possible margin, and customers get a quality product at a great price,” Becker said.

“We want to grow Betty Basics to be the go-to for anyone looking for that extra warmth, streamlining and comfort we all require from day-to-day ready to wear.”

Sass Clothing services over 500 independent boutiques across Australia and New Zealand.
