Baby product finds some legroom down under
American childrenswear label Babylegs has made a cheeky launch into the Australian market.
Established in April 2005 by stay-at-home mother, Nicole Donnelly, the company was originally formed to keep baby's legs' warm during nappy changes and "naked-ie butt time".
After purchasing a pair for her 15-month-old daughter earlier this year, Sarah Hutton became the company's first Australian distributor; offering to bring the range down under.
"I ordered a couple of pairs online and the owner told me she didn't have a distributor in Australia so I came up with the suggestion," she said. "We spent the first couple of months exchanging emails about how the product works, what it's about, financing. I've never worked in fashion or retail so it's been unreal!"
Already attracting the eyes of stockists in Queensland, NSW and Victoria, the range is also selling online.
"Because I'm in Adelaide I've started here by approaching retailers and so forth but I am planning to sell throughout Australia," Hutton said.
Available in one size and in 50 designs, the leg warmers retail for $17 and are made from 80 per cent cotton, 15 per cent polyester and five per cent spandex with organic and wool varieties also set to hit the market soon. While the range is aimed at young infants, Hutton said that children aged up to eight-years-old could also wear the styles below the knee or on the arms.
The company is also trialling tank and underwear sets but Hutton said she is keen to focus on the leg warmers for its Australian launch.
"I wanted to focus on the Babylegs while starting out because I didn't want people to confuse it with other products. It's a fun product and I think it will do well in the market here today."
