SYDNEY: Wool research and promotion body Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has appointed the former head of the Woolmark Company as its new CEO.

Brenda McGahan, who officially takes up her new position on Monday March 2, is returning to the wool industry after an absence of almost two years absence.

AWI chairman Wal Merriman said he was delighted that AWI had been able to secure her services.

"I am happy to welcome Brenda back into the fold," he said. "She is a passionate advocate for the wool industry and the Board of AWI is 100 per cent committed to her appointment."

McGahan's appointment followed an extensive recruitment and selection process, he said.

"It’s a tribute to Brenda that she was selected from an impressive array of candidates for this position."

McGahan said she was proud to be returning to the wool industry to take the helm of AWI.

"AWI is going through a major transition and is facing multiple challenges, making it a privilege to help the Board during these difficult times."

"I look forward to leading the team at AWI and working with the Board to improve the future for wool globally."

Prior to joining the wool industry, McGahan had an impressive track record working with retailers in Australia and overseas.

Her predecessor at the helm of AWI was Craig Walsh, who left the role late last year.
