MELBOURNE: UK online giant Asos is set to nurture emerging Australian designers, putting a call out for work placement interest through the Australian Fashion Council (AFC).
AFC president Michael Abeysekera said the online retailer for men and women has indicated it will offer paid internships to selected Australian designers in order to build links for the future.
“I was approached by the head buyer at Asos who is very interested in collaborating with 'fresh new Australian designers' who have something compelling to offer initially in menswear," he said.
"He recognises the incredible design talent we have here and is keen to get something happening via the AFC as soon as possible.”
Asos was established in 2000 and offers 36,000 branded and own label product lines. Approximately 1300 new products are introduced each week. The AFC is currently taking expressions of interest from designers keen to undertake a work placement with Asos later this year.
The AFC is a division of the Council of Textile and Fashion Industries Australia (TFIA). One of its roles is to forge links with international buyers to promote Australian talent.
