SYDNEY: A Sydney licensing company is aiming to bring back the life of Andy Warhol through the iconic artist's work.
Alexandria-based company Hot Springs has won the exclusive distribution and licensing rights for the deceased artist's self-titled apparel and accessories line across Australia and New Zealand.
Set to hit stores in August, the brand's summer 2006 collection will focus on the full scope of Warhol's art with the famous Campbell's Soup can set to play a major role.
Hot Springs managing director Wassim Gazal said the new range would be targeted at men and women who enjoy "cutting edge urban fashion".
"The Andy Warhol individual [is a] streetwise urbanite, 18 to 28-years-old who has an awareness of leading fashion brands. [The target market] has a sufficient level of disposable income. They understand that being different is good and appreciate artistic expression."
Gazal said the 2006 womenswear range, which will sit alongside Milk and Honey, Mermaid Sister and Coast Clothing in Hot Springs stable of brands, would include a mixture of streetwear basics, fashion items and denim pieces, complemented by printed basics and singles, and urban utility-inspired tops and pants.
The men's collection will feature a wearable mixture of basic and fashion forward items including boardshorts, light fleece jackets and printed singlets and T-shirts.
Both mens and womenswear will be available in XS, S, M, L and XL sizes, with price points of between $49 for T-shirts to $250 for denimwear.
The range, managed by the Andy Warhol Foundation, is already well established in several overseas markets including the US, Japan and Europe. Gazal said he was confident the range would also be embraced by the Australian fashion community, owing to the artist's ongoing popularity.
"As Warhol himself said: 'Fashion wasn't what you wore someplace anymore; it was the whole reason for going.'"
