The Los-Angeles headquartered company today announced same store sales defied economic conditions in the fourth quarter of 2008, up by 10 per cent on the same period last year.
Total retail sales for the global fashion chain increased 53 per cent to $98 million while same store sales for the entire year were up 22 per cent compared to 2007.
Sales over the month of December, a period which saw American Apparel open its third domestic site in Adelaide's Rundle street, also increased by three per cent.
The company opened 81 new locations across the world over 2008, taking its total number of stores to 260. It is believed further openings in Australia are scheduled for 2009.
In a release issued after the opening of its first Australian store in Melbourne, directors said public response had been "so overwhelmingly positive", it was searching for further locations.
