NATIONAL: Waterford Crystal is claiming a world-first in its collaboration with Australian couture designer Alex Perry.

The luxury crystal company has collaborated with the likes of John Rocha, Jasper Conran and Marc Jacobs on stemware and giftware ranges over the last decade. This is the first time its precision-cut jewels have been applied in a fashion context.

Alex Perry has designed three couture gowns in a palette of lilac and nude, embellished with Waterford Crystal chandelier droplets in assorted cuts and sizes.

"The silhouettes are dramatic, hundreds of metres of lilac and nude tulle cascade over underwired corseted bodices," Perry explained. "Tulle is swathed and wrapped, then embellished with sparkling Waterford Crystal."

The gowns will be on display in Waterford Crystal concessions at David Jones flagship stores, including Market Street, Sydney; Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne; and Hay Street Mall, Perth from January 20 to February 27, 2011.

Consumers will also be given the opportunity to win a $15,000 couture gown and design consultation with Perry as part of the initiative.

They must purchase a piece of Waterford Crystal or list a minimum of $200 worth of Waterford Crystal on a David Jones Bridal Gift Registry between January 20 and March 31.
