ADELAIDE: An emerging designer with sights set on building his own label won a coveted award at the 2010 Adelaide Fashion Festival.
Jaimie Sortino came first in the Emerging Designer Award at the Chambord SA Designers Fashion Showcase. He beat seven other hopefuls with his range of six dramatic evening gowns and cocktail dresses.
Themed ‘Raw’, Sortino said his collection was predominantly black and white, with a dose of lime green and purple. Exaggerated silhouettes, tulle and satin were key to the look.
The competition was judged by an industry panel including designers Liza Emanuele and Mary-Kyri, Harpers Bazaar fashion editor Christine Centenera and Attitude magazine editor Selena Battersby.
Sortino was awarded the use of a BMW for a year. He said he intends to move to Sydney to study design at FBI Fashion College in 2011.
Runner up in the competition was Lucy Tucker for Sainte Lucie. Other finalists were Julie White, Yvonne Baulderstone for brand Yvonne Faye, Alice Rawlinson for Divine Madness, Ivana Milosevic and Katerina Vrynios of Ivana & Katerina, Greta Rumsby for GretaKate and Hayley Osborne for Hayley Kate.
