NATIONAL: Department store David Jones has announced three new store openings and a refurbishment program for three additional sites across the country. The Sydney-headquartered company will open new sites at Macquarie Centre in mid 2011, Gold Coast's Pacific Fair in late 2011 and Western Australia's Whitford in early 2012.

Refurbishments would span Kotara in Newcastle, Marion in South Australia and Karrinyup in Western Australia.

David Jones claimed the extra 40,000sqm of space from both programs would deliver $200 million in additional sales.

AMP Capital Shopping Centres, which operates Pacific Fair and Macquarie Centre, announced both sites would undergo redevelopments valued at more than $400 million and $300 million respectively.

AMP Capital Shopping Centres acting managing director Bryan Hynes said the centres serviced a broad market.

"The addition of David Jones also recognises the changing demographics of north-west Sydney and the Gold Coast which are demanding improved retail and leisure choices. With such unique customer bases at each centre - spanning residents, tourists, students and business workers - we aim to introduce innovative and inspiring retail and leisure choices which have not been seen in either location previously."
