Last month, you were raked over the knuckles. So how did you fair this time around?

Random audits by the Fair Work Ombudsman have revealed 95 per cent of business in the Melbourne CBD are correctly paying their employees.

In June, several clothing retailers across Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart and Wagga were forced to reimburse staff for contravening workplace laws around uniforms.

The fines were issued after employees were forced to pay for and wear company clothing on the shop floor.

This time around, Fair Work inspectors made visits to 217 businesses in CBD Melbourne to assess compliance with record keeping and payslip requirements of the Fair Work Act.

Retailers from 50 different industry sub sectors were involved in the inspections, including clothing, supermarket and grocery, footwear, sports and camping stores.

Inspectors found 88 per cent of employers were compliant with payslip and record keeping requirements and 84 per cent were compliant across all obligations.

Ten businesses were found to have made pay rate errors, and more than $20,600 was recouped for 23 employees who had been underpaid.

The underpayments ranged from $70 to $10,000.

Inspectors determined that the errors were inadvertent mistakes based on a lack of understanding of employer obligations, and were immediately rectified.
