Iconic Australian retailer Sportsgirl is on track to celebrate a significant milestone.

Founded in 1948, the fashion chain now boasts 114 stores nationwide, and will mark its 65th anniversary in business this year with a string of fresh initiatives.

Top on the list is a brand new website, which Sportsgirl has confirmed will launch this year, and the continuation of its successful 'Sportsgirl's Like' collaborations with new and upcoming designer partnerships in the pipeline.

The brand has also hinted it is warming up to stake its claim on another technological first, in a bid to maintain its track record for staying ahead in the digital era.

As previously reported in Ragtrader [June 17, 2011], the retailer has a strong track record of achieving digital firsts in the fashion market.

Sportsgirl.com.au launched in 2007, and fast became Google’s most popular search term, with Sportsgirl claiming the title as the first retailer in Australia to incorporate an online community.

The brand launched its Twitter and Facebook pages in 2009 and in June 2011, Sportsgirl became the first fashion retailer in Australia to launch QR codes in-store.

In July 2010, Sportsgirl was also the first Australian fashion retailer to launch a mobile shopping platform/application.

In May this year, Sportsgirl confirmed the addition of Vine to its omni-channel digital strategy, as reported on ragtrader.com.au, and claims it is the first Australian retailer to launch its brand on the microblogging platform.

The birthday celebrations will also be marked with the launch of a limited edition #TeamSportsgirl tee commemorating the brand’s birthday year – ‘48’ - available in stores now.
