Which Australian consumers are more likely to spend online and how can you capture them?

Those located in Melbourne's CBD district shopped online almost twice as much as those located in Sydney in July.

This is according to data released from online payments provider eWay.

The data analysed 2.2 million eWay transactions in July, up from 1.9 million during the same time last year.

Melbourne's CBD, which captures 250,000 daily commuters and residents, represented 1.8 per cent of Australia's transactions during the month.

Meanwhile, Toowoomba topped the regional online shopping stakes with more than 0.4 per cent of e-commerce transactions in July.

Australians made a total of $361 million in online transactions over the period via eWay retailers.

This was up 19.3 per cent from the year before at $303 million, with an average $162.72 per transaction.

eWay chief Matt Bullock said the data unearthed some interesting trends.

"It’s no surprise that the city centres of Sydney and Melbourne rank quite highly in our Online Retail Report.

"It shows a clear trend that Aussie workers, and their bosses, are very comfortable with deliveries coming to the office.

"Diving deeper into July’s figures, the sheer volume of transactions we’re seeing in regional areas is really intriguing.

"Some of the categories that experienced the biggest growth might also surprise a lot of people.
