Department store Myer has slashed 35 head office jobs in Melbourne, following the removal of 80 staff in recent years.

The latest cuts cover management, business support, and administration roles.

The cuts come at a tumultuous time for the department store sector in Australia.

This week, David Jones parent company Woolworths appointed Levi Strauss executive Roy Bagattini as its new leader.

The move would see current CEO Ian Moir, who led the embattled $2 billion acquisition of David Jones, step down.

He will continue to oversee David Jones while Bagattini leads the broader Woolworths South Africa group.

Last week, collapsed Australian department store Harris Scarfe announced it would shutter 21 stores across the country.

The consolidation, taking over the next four weeks, is a bid by receivers try to steady the ship as it pursues a sale of business.

Even UK department store Debenhams has fared poorly in the market, closing its only Australian department store this year.
