Adventure retailer Kathmandu is encouraging Australians to trade in their old adventure gear to support the Australian Red Cross.

The #TradeForNew initiative will see Kathmandu stores across the country collect thousands of items of pre-loved adventure clothing to be donated to Red Cross.

A similar partnership exists between Red Cross and national retailer Country Road.

The items donated to Kathmandu will be provided to Red Cross stores, supporting them in their national fundraising.

This is the first time Kathmandu has opened its doors to encourage customers to bring in their old jackets and fleece and trade it for something new.

Kathmandu community coordinator Lindsay Tallott said the campaign furthers Kathmandu’s commitment to encouraging a sustainable mindset amongst all travellers.

"At Kathmandu we are dedicated to encouraging all Australians to tread lightly, and tread with purpose, in everything they do."

Donations can be made at any Kathmandu store during spring.

Consumers can simply place their gear in the marked bins to receive a 10% voucher off their next Kathmandu purchase.

All recycled jackets and fleece, not just those sold by Kathmandu, are welcome to be donated to the appeal.

Kathmandu fielded a $316 million takeover from Briscoe Group this year.
