As New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) kicks off, ragtrader.com.au shines a spotlight on its emerging designers. Introducing, Danielle Power-Silk.

What is the inspiration behind your collection at NZFW?

Collection Number One is inspired by my fascination for black and white cinematic photography and iconic women of Hollywood's Golden Age and today. Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Monica Bellucci to name a few.

What are some of the core fabrications used?

Silk, wool and cotton are my top three fabrications used for this collection.

What about key embellishments and detailing?

My favourite detail in my collection is the gorgeous white Spanish embroidery featured on three of my designs.

Where will the range be manufactured?

Manufacturing is currently taking place in New Zealand by my team of two and I which I am expanding.

How many pieces are there?

There are 17 pieces in Collection Number One.

How many wholesale accounts do you have?

I am launching at Fashion Week and will be looking for stockists.

What is the biggest challenge facing New Zealand designers?

The biggest challengeis only selling your designs in New Zealand. Don't limit your market. There is a whole wide world out there and people who will be looking for a designer like you.

What do you see as the biggest opportunity?

The biggest opportunity is finding your market in New Zealand, engaging with them and knowing that they love what you are offering them. Participating and making the most of NZFW, fashion shows and events in New Zealand. It's important to get involved and put yourself out there.

What is the breakthrough moment you are proud of?

Now is my breakthrough moment and I am extremely proud of myself for showing at Fashion Week.

What is the biggest career challenge you have faced?

The biggest challenge for me so far has been sourcing fabric. I would love to gain more connections in the fabric sourcing world.

Where would you like to see your brand in five years?

I would like to be stocked in my favourite department stores, have my own stores nationally, internationally and show at Fashion Weeks around the world.
