Amazon has launched a new service in the US, allowing customers to try on apparel and footwear prior to purchase.

Amazon Wardrobe, currently in beta, has been touted as another potential blow to the department store sector.

It allows members of its Prime program to trial purchases seven days prior to purchasing.

Shipments arrive in a re-sealable box with a pre-paid label for returns.

The more customers purchase, the higher the discount with partner brands including Calvin Klein, Levi's and Adidas.

More than a million pieces of clothing and accessories are eligible under the program.

The news comes amid rumours activewear brand Nike will start selling via Amazon.

The online giant is set to launch in Australia in September.
