86% of people aged 18-34 have made a purchase through their mobile phone according to a recent study conducted by software developer Bronto.

The study also found that 59% of the 18-34 demographic made their first mobile purchase within the past 12 months highlighting a growing usage of mobile platforms by consumers.

The report also found that individuals earning a higher annual income tended to make more purchases through their mobile than any other group.

45% of respondents reporting an income of $33,000 or less have made a purchase through their mobile while that number jumps to 73% for individuals earning $132,001 or more.

The report states that mobile optimisation is key for brands looking to attract consumers to their platforms and stay competitive in the market.

“It seems just a matter of time before the 43% of Australians who told us they've never made a purchase using their phone take the plunge.

“If it's difficult to browse or check out, the customer is more likely to abandon the effort.

“Wealthier customers, those with children at home and younger people are already shopping this way. If you aren't making it easy to shop your site from a phone, you risk falling behind.

“Understand what your online competitors are offering, make sure you have a robust online review program and keep your own site fresh and up to date.”
