These are the future stars of Australian retail.

The Young Retailer of The Year Awards took place at an awards ceremony in Sydney last Friday.

Convened by the National Retail Association, the awards recognise excellence among retailers under 25 years of age.

It included finalists from Myer, Target, Esprit, Jeanswest and Tigerlily.

The overall winner for 2014 was Joanna Zurzolo.

Awards were also presented to Jacob Bache (Innovation Award), Medina Cicak (Scholarship Award), Marnie Bain-Lindsay (Rising Star Award), Katherine Powell (Runner Up) and Aaron Lum (Highly Commended).

National Retail Association Trevor Evans said the awards promote retailing as a career choice.

"We are extremely proud of all our young retailers, as well as the collective achievements of the broader retail sector. Together we are strengthening the industry for a brighter and more prosperous future," he said.

Retail is one of the country’s largest employers.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, retail businesses employed over 1.2 million people and generated a total income of $272 billion as at 30 June 2014.

The industry is expected to see growth of 8.9 per cent by 2017, with many of jobs coming from new growth opportunities in the online sector.
