David Jones is set to open a new format store at Wollongong Central in late 2017.

The move comes as department store Myer plans to exit its Wollongong location.

The new store will be located in the space that will be vacated by Myer in October 2016, with construction commencing immediately.

David Jones Wollongong Central will operate across three floors and will incorporate a mix of fashion, beauty, accessories, home and an expanded food offering.

It will also offer a range of services across personal shopping, Click and Collect, Concierge and beauty.

David Jones chief John Dixon backed the opening.

"The City of Wollongong is undergoing an exciting transformation and this move will see us elevate our current offering to deliver a premium retail experience at a prime location in the heart of the city’s fashion and entertainment precinct," he said.

“The Illawarra is an important market for David Jones and one we are proud to invest in.

""The major refurbishment of Wollongong Central combined with a loyal and discerning customer base underscores this opportunity.

"We have a longstanding history here and we’re excited to offer our customers a first-rate retail experience on par with the best department stores globally.

"We will combine a modern store design and the latest retail technology with the best in brands and customer service.”
