The latest retail trade figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) have revealed lacklustre sales and a struggling fashion sector.

The ABS report, released today, analysed trade activity for November 2011 and showed that Australian retail turnover overall remained relatively unchanged (0.0 per cent) in November 2011, seasonally adjusted. This is despite a rise of 0.2 per cent in October, with sales totalling $20.927 billion, according to the ABS.

The November breakdown also revealed that clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing suffered most during the period, with a drop in turnover of 0.4 per cent. Department stores were also affected, and reported a sales dip of 0.1 per cent. Other sectors individually, such as food retailing (0.0 per cent) and household goods retailing (0.0 per cent), reported no change in turnover.

Nationally, Western Australia reported the greatest rise in turnover, at 0.8 per cent, followed by Queensland with a 0.5 per cent rise, Tasmania and the Northern Territory (0.4 per cent), and New South Wales and South Australia, which experienced a 0.3 and 0.2 per cent increase respectively.

Turnover fell in Victoria by 1.1 per cent and the Australian Capital Territory (-1.9 per cent).

Trend turnover, however, rose by 0.3 per cent in November 2011, following increases of 0.3 per cent in both October 2011 and September 2011.
